What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction that features advanced science and technology in a dystopian society. It often explores the consequences of the intersection of technology and society, depicting a world where the line between humanity and machine has become blurred.

The term “cyberpunk” was coined in the 1980s to describe a new type of science fiction that focused on the impact of computer and network technology on society. The genre is characterized by a focus on artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the internet, and often portrays a future where corporations hold immense power and influence.

One of the most well-known examples of cyberpunk literature is the novel “Neuromancer” by William Gibson, which depicts a world where people can connect their brains directly to computers and enter virtual reality. Other notable works in the genre include the novels “Snow Crash” by Neal Stephenson and “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick, both of which explore the concept of artificial intelligence and its impact on society.

In addition to literature, cyberpunk has also influenced film, television, and video games. The 1982 film “Blade Runner,” based on the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” is considered a classic example of cyberpunk, as is the popular video game franchise “Deus Ex.” The Netflix series “Altered Carbon” and the video game “Cyberpunk 2077” are also notable examples of the genre.

Cyberpunk has a dedicated and passionate fan base, with many people drawn to the genre’s exploration of the intersection of technology and society. It has had a significant influence on popular culture and continues to inspire creative works in a variety of media.
