What is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction and speculative fiction that combines elements of Victorian-era technology with futuristic or fantastical elements. The term “steampunk” was coined in the 1980s as a reference to the works of science fiction authors such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, who imagined futuristic technologies powered by steam.
Steampunk often incorporates Victorian-era fashion and design elements, such as corsets, top hats, and pocket watches. It also often features steam-powered machinery, such as airships and steam-powered robots. The aesthetic of steampunk is characterized by a mix of old and new, with a focus on the industrial and mechanical.
Steampunk has gained a significant following in recent years, with a thriving community of fans who are passionate about the genre. This community often gathers at conventions and events where they can share their love of all things steampunk. These events often feature vendors selling steampunk-inspired clothing and accessories, as well as workshops and panels on various steampunk-related topics.
In addition to being a popular subgenre of science fiction, steampunk has also inspired a wide range of creative works, including literature, film, television, music, and art. Some notable examples of steampunk literature include the novels “The Difference Engine” by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling and “The Anubis Gates” by Tim Powers. In film and television, steampunk has been featured in productions such as “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” “Wild Wild West,” and “The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.” Steampunk video games such as “Bioshock” and “Final Fantasy VII” have also gained a large following.
Steampunk has also inspired a subculture of people who embrace the aesthetic and lifestyle of the genre. This subculture, known as “steampunks,” often incorporates steampunk-inspired fashion and accessories into their daily lives and participate in events and activities that celebrate the genre.
Steampunk has a wide appeal, with fans ranging from science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts to those who are simply drawn to the unique and creative aesthetic of the genre. Whether through literature, film, television, music, art, or fashion, steampunk has made a lasting impact on popular culture and continues to inspire and entertain fans around the world.
Unique HandMade Art
Lairdware is made mainly from recycled, repurposed, reused, and upcycled materials whenever possible.
RECYCLING
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials and objects into new materials and objects. It reduces energy use, air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfill).
REPURPOSING
Repurposing is to use something as something else, usually for a purpose unintended by the original manufacturer. Repurposing is often done using items usually considered to be junk or rubbish
REUSING
Reuse is the action or practice of using an item, whether for its original purpose or to fulfill a different function. The tradition of reusing salvaged objects (objet trouvé) is often used in art
UPCYCLING
Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming useless or unwanted products into new products perceived to be of greater quality, such as artistic value or environmental value.
